About Inflation Calculator

A dollar today buys what 10 cents bought 100 years ago. Inflation is the silent killer of wealth. Our Inflation Calculator uses official Consumer Price Index (CPI) data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, spanning from 1913 to the present, to show you exactly how much purchasing power your money has lost (or gained) over any period. Whether you are adjusting historical salaries, comparing investment returns, or planning for retirement, this tool provides the historical context you need.

How to Use the Inflation Calculator

  • Forward Calculation: "What is $1,000 from 1980 worth in today's money?" Input 1980 as the start year, 2026 as the end year, amount $1,000. Result: Approximately $3,700. Your grandparents' $1,000 was equivalent to almost $4,000 today.
  • Reverse Calculation: "What is today's $50,000 salary equivalent to in 1990?" Input 2026 as start, 1990 as end. Result: Approximately $22,000. You are earning more dollars, but your purchasing power relative to 1990 may have increased or decreased based on your actual salary.

Understanding CPI and Core Inflation

The CPI measures the average change in prices paid by urban consumers for a basket of goods and services (food, energy, housing, clothing, transportation). "Core Inflation" excludes volatile food and energy prices to show underlying trends. Our tool uses headline CPI for most calculations, but we provide a toggle to core CPI for economic analysis.

Why Inflation Matters for Investors

If your savings account earns 0.5% interest but inflation is 3.0%, your real return is -2.5%. You are losing purchasing power every year. Use our calculator to compute the "real return" on your investments. For example, if the S&P 500 returned 10% in a year, but inflation was 4%, your real return is 6%. This is why wealthy individuals invest in assets like real estate, stocks, and TIPS (Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities) that historically outpace inflation.

The Lost Decade: Hyperinflation Scenarios

In extreme cases (e.g., Weimar Germany, Zimbabwe, Venezuela), hyperinflation destroys currencies. Our calculator includes a "Hyperinflation Scenario" slider. Drag it to 100% monthly inflation (the hyperinflation definition). You'll see that $1,000 becomes worthless in months. This tool helps illustrate why hard assets like gold and Bitcoin are sometimes called "inflation hedges," though they carry their own risks.

FAQ: Inflation Calculator

What is the average inflation rate in the US?

Long-term average (1913-2026) is approximately 3.2% per year. Recent years have seen higher volatility (2% in 2020, 9% in 2022, 3-4% in 2024-2026).

How do I adjust for inflation in my retirement plan?

Assume a 3% inflation rate for medical expenses (they rise faster) and 2.5% for general expenses. Use our forward projection mode. If you need $80,000 in today's dollars to retire in 20 years, you need to plan for $80,000 * (1.025^20) = $131,000 in nominal dollars.

What are TIPS?

Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities are US government bonds whose principal adjusts with CPI. If inflation rises, your principal rises. They offer a low but guaranteed real return. Use our calculator to compare TIPS yields against nominal Treasury yields.

Inflation Calculator is optimized for fast browser-based use, so you can test multiple scenarios in seconds.

Formula & Logic

  • 01Inflation adjustment is computed by applying cumulative inflation factor across selected periods: Adjusted Value = Original Amount * (CPI_target / CPI_base).
  • 02Equivalent value between years is estimated as amount × (price index target / price index base).
  • 03Cumulative inflation rate = ((CPI_current - CPI_original) / CPI_original) × 100.
  • 04Real return = ((1 + nominal return) / (1 + inflation rate)) - 1.
  • 05Forward projection: Future Value = Present Value × (1 + assumed inflation rate)^years.

Practical Examples

  • 01Baseline check: Use realistic inputs in Inflation Calculator to generate a first-pass estimate.
  • 02Sensitivity check: Change one key input at a time to compare how the output shifts.
  • 03Decision check: Save two or more scenarios and use the differences to choose the better option.

Important Limitations

  • Results depend on the accuracy of your inputs.
  • Displayed values may be rounded for readability.
  • Financial outputs are planning estimates and do not include institution-specific fees unless provided.
