About Interest Rate Calculator

Lenders love to hide the true cost of borrowing behind confusing rates. Our Interest Rate Calculator cuts through the noise, now with multi-currency support for USD, GBP, CAD, and NPR. Whether you need to solve for the implied interest rate on a loan (given payment, principal, and term), convert an APR to APY, or compute the effective yield on a bond, this tool provides the answers across international markets.

Mode 1: Solve for Interest Rate on a Loan

You see an ad: "Get a $10,000 personal loan for $300/month for 48 months." The ad doesn't list the APR. Input Principal = $10,000, Payment = $300, Term = 48 months. Click solve. Our iterative solver calculates the interest rate: 16.5% APR. That is very high for a personal loan. This mode is essential for shopping for credit cards, car loans, or any financing where the rate isn't transparent. It protects you from predatory lending.

Mode 2: APR to APY Converter (and Vice Versa)

  • APR (Annual Percentage Rate): The simple annual rate. Used for loans and credit cards. Does NOT include compounding.
  • APY (Annual Percentage Yield): The effective rate including compounding. Used for savings accounts and CDs.

The difference is crucial. A credit card with 18% APR compounded daily has an APY of 19.7%. A savings account with 4% APR compounded monthly has an APY of 4.07%. Always compare APY for savings, APR for loans. Our converter handles both directions.

Mode 3: Effective Interest Rate (Nominal vs. Real)

The nominal interest rate is the stated rate. The real interest rate is the nominal rate minus inflation. If your savings account pays 5% (nominal) but inflation is 3%, your real interest rate is 2%. Use our "Real Rate" calculator to understand your true purchasing power growth. For lenders, the real rate matters for profitability.

Mode 4: Periodic Interest Rate

Sometimes you need the monthly or daily rate. Input the APR (e.g., 6%) and the compounding frequency. The tool outputs:

  • Periodic rate (e.g., monthly = 0.5%)
  • Effective annual rate (APY = 6.17%)

This is useful for credit card interest calculations (daily periodic rate) and mortgage comparisons (monthly periodic rate).

Bond Yield to Maturity (YTM) Approximation

For bond investors, YTM is the total return expected if the bond is held to maturity. Input the bond's current market price, face value ($1,000 typically), coupon rate, and years to maturity. Our calculator solves for the approximate YTM. If the bond is trading at a discount (price < $1,000), YTM > coupon rate. If at a premium, YTM < coupon rate.

FAQ: Interest Rate Calculator

What is usury and what are legal interest rate limits?

Usury laws cap the maximum interest rate. As of 2026, many states cap consumer loan rates at 36% APR (military lending act) or lower. Credit cards can charge higher due to bank charters. Our calculator flags rates above 36% as "potentially illegal."

How do I calculate the interest rate on a zero-coupon bond?

Zero-coupon bonds pay no coupon interest; they are sold at a deep discount. Input Present Value (price paid), Future Value (face value at maturity), and Number of Years. Solve for I/Y. That's your yield.

What is the Fisher Effect?

The equation linking nominal rates, real rates, and inflation: (1 + Nominal) = (1 + Real) × (1 + Inflation). Our calculator solves for any missing variable in the Fisher equation.

Interest Rate Calculator is optimized for fast browser-based use, so you can test multiple scenarios in seconds.

Formula & Logic

  • 01Unknown interest rate is solved numerically (via Newton-Raphson or binary search) from known principal, payment, and term constraints: PV = PMT*(1 - (1+r)^-n)/r + FV/(1+r)^n.
  • 02APR to APY conversion: APY = (1 + APR / m)^m - 1, where m = number of compounding periods per year.
  • 03Fisher Equation: (1 + Nominal) = (1 + Real) × (1 + Inflation). Real rate = (1 + Nominal)/(1 + Inflation) - 1.
  • 04Periodic rate = APR / periods per year. Credit card daily rate = APR / 365.
  • 05Bond YTM approximation: YTM ≈ (Coupon Payment + (Face Value - Price)/Years) / ((Face Value + Price)/2).

Practical Examples

  • 01Baseline check: Use realistic inputs in Interest Rate Calculator to generate a first-pass estimate.
  • 02Sensitivity check: Change one key input at a time to compare how the output shifts.
  • 03Decision check: Save two or more scenarios and use the differences to choose the better option.

Important Limitations

  • Results depend on the accuracy of your inputs.
  • Displayed values may be rounded for readability.
  • Financial outputs are planning estimates and do not include institution-specific fees unless provided.
